How to Apply

It’s easy to apply for funding from the Brooke Forbes Legacy Fund. You have to be a registered Charity in Canada and you have to have a good idea for a project that provides minority youth with audio production skills. We award approximately $2200 each fiscal year. We are currently open for applications for 2020-2021. Deadline for submissions is April 17, 2020, 5 pm PST.

What We Like

Who Decides?

We like projects that:

  • Involve minority youth
  • Teach radio/audio production skills
  • Result in participants telling stories in audio from their own lives
  • Include exposure to a radio station and/or podcast production centre

The applications are reviewed by the Brooke Forbes Legacy Fund Advisory Committee which consists of Joan Andersen, Joy Crysdale, Karen Levine and Sid Sawyer. We were colleagues and friends of Brooke's, either at the CBC or Co-op Radio. Brooke meant a lot to all of us and we feel privileged to be able to keep her dream alive.

What is required?

Applicants must:

  • Fill in a short application form, detailing the project and the proposed budget
  • If successful:
    • Complete the project
    • Do a final report
    • Provide photos, audio and testimonials

In May 2021, the Fund was donated to Carleton University's School of Journalism and Communication  to set up the Brooke Forbes Award for Internships in the field Audio Production.  Students who are Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour and demonstrate an interest in audio production can apply to have costs related to their internships covered by the Brooke Forbes Award.
